Thugs tie up barman in attack

TROUBLED city pub the Flying Horse is closed after thugs wrecked the premises and threatened a barman.

The member of staff was grabbed and locked in the pub's toilets for two hours during the attack.

And regulars were forced to flee the pub, in Dryden Road, Wonford, as three men stormed the building and smashed up its contents.

A witness claims two of the men covered the barman's head before imprisoning him in the toilets. The trio then ripped out the property's plumbing and piping then left.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, which happened at around 11.15pm on Sunday, January 31, and are appealing for any witnesses to contact them.

One regular, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, told the Echo: "The place was completely smashed up and the barman was tied up and locked in the toilets for two hours before he freed himself.

He had a bag put over his head and is in a bad way with nerves now.

"There were quite a few people in the pub at the time. Everyone ran for their lives."

The pub's future had been in question following a number of incidents.

Police said it had been a haunt for drugs and anti-social behaviour since September 2008. They carried out raids in August and September last year after neighbours made several complaints to them and the city council.

And it was recently subject to a licensing review where new landlord Andrew Martin pledged to clean up the pub's image and waged a 'get links of london charms tough' campaign on drug-taking and anti-social behaviour.

The Echo understands Mr Martin has since left the Flying Horse.

The pub has displayed a sign on its door saying it is closed until further notice.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Emily Sheppard said many witnesses were too afraid to contact police. But officers would offer those who did come forward as much protection as possible.

"During the incident, a man was over-powered and made to fear for his safety," she said. "I would like to appeal to anyone who witnessed anything to come forward. I know people are scared but if they can tell us what happened, then we will try to protect the.

"It is genuine fear and we understand that, but in order for us to get these people out of the public's way, we need people to speak to us."

A spokesman for Punch Taverns, which owns the Flying Horse, said: "We are fully cooperating with the police investigation and cannot comment further at this stage."

Three men, aged 23, 25 and 37, from the Exeter area, have been arrested on suspicion of burglary in connection with the incident. The 25-year-old and 23-year-old were also arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment.

All three have been given police bail until Thursday, April 8, pending further enquiries.

The figure was revealed at a national meeting on food safety and sanitation supervision here Monday amid an ongoing campaign on regulating workshops and selling companies in the fields of mining, quartzite processing, gem processing, stone processing, smelting and cement production among others.

TWO defendants in the trial of eight rival football fans have told a jury they watched a violent clash between the supporters out of "curiosity". At Derby Crown Court yesterday, Matthew Freeman, of The Pinfold, Belper, and Paul Nightingale, of Main Road, Whatstandwell, said they were not involved in the incident between Derby County and Nottingham Forest supporters at the Florence Nightingale pub on January 23 last year.

The two men, along with six other defendants, have pleaded not guilty to affray following the clash.

At the hearing, Freeman told the court he walked to the London Road pub with his friend, Alex Marshall, alongside another group of Derby fans. He said: "I was just talking to Alex Marshall. The rest were ahead of us and I heard a comment by one of the group ahead. The comment sounded like 'there are six of them in there'."

When asked by his defence barrister, James Horne, what he thought the comment meant, Freeman replied: "I assumed at the time it meant Nottingham Forest supporters, due to us playing them, but I did not think anything of it because I believed the Florence Nightingale pub was a home supporters' pub.

"I did not think there would be any away supporters in that public house."

The court heard that when the group arrived at the pub, Mr Marshall stayed outside while Freeman, 20, followed others inside.

CCTV footage showed Freeman, who works for Denbybased Deb Ltd, was inside the pub for 26 seconds. He said: "I could hear things banging and the smashing of glass. I peered in to see what was happening.

Defendant denies being 'spotte

A DEFENDANT in the trial of eight rival football fans has told a jury he felt scared by a violent clash between two sets of supporters.

At Derby Crown Court yesterday, Daniel Slowinski said he was not involved in the incident between Derby County and Nottingham Forest supporters at the Florence Nightingale pub.

The 22-year-old Network Rail worker is one of eight men who have pleaded not guilty to affray following the clash on January 23 last year.

Slowinski's defence barrister, Alastair Munt, asked his client how he felt after the two sets of supporters had clashed. He replied: "Still scared. The worse of it had been and gone, in my opinion, so relieved it was over and done with."

The court heard that Slowinski had gone to Juicy Couture Fake Handbags the pub with a friend prior to Derby County's FA Cup clash with Nottingham Forest at Pride Park. When asked by Mr Munt what he did next, Slowinski said: "I moved towards the exit door. I had a look at what was happening and that was pretty much it."

Along with Slowinski, 22, of Rosemary Drive, Alvaston, seven other defendants have pleaded not guilty. They are Matthew Freeman, 20, of The Pinfold, Belper; Steven Bambrick, 36, of Main Street, Swadlincote; Roger Clarke, 48, of Holloway, Matlock; Paul Nightingale, 36, of Main Road, Whatstandwell; Craig Wheeldon, 29, of Cromford Road, Wirksworth; Paul Moss, 40, of Edgeway, Nottingham, and Aaron Wakefield, 30, of Eltham Drive, Nottingham.

ORONO - The University of Maine announced on Wednesday that Tanner House of the men's ice hockey team and Maire Dineen of the field hockey team are the recipients of the 2010 M Club Dean Smith Awards.

The awards are presented to the male and female student-athlete with outstanding academic and athletic achievement along with citizenship and community service.

House, a junior, serves as captain of the men's ice hockey team. A finance major, he has a 3.82 cumulative grade point average. He received a silver medal as a two-time Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winner. He has been named to the Hockey East Academic Honor Roll.

In 2008, House was named to the six-member Hockey East Academic All-Star team, which selected the top scholar-athletes by position. House has been named to the Dean's List every semester and is a recipient of the Presidential Achievement Pin.

Dineen, a junior, has been a standout in field hockey the past three years. She is a double major in international affairs and economics with a 3.89 cumulative grade point average. She received a silver medal as a two-time Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winner.

Dineen has been named to the America East Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll three times. She has twice been named to the America East All-Academic Team, holding the highest grade point average on the squad for the second year in a row. Last year, she was selected to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA District I At-Large All-Academic First Team.

Dineen has also been named to the Dean's List every semester and is a recipient of the Presidential Achievement Pin. She has also been named to the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association Division I National Academic squad.

Explosion sank steamer, killi

Weathering on a hillside in St Mary's cemetery are a series of graves that recall a maritime disaster off Dover that saw the death of 155 men, women and children.

It was Sunday, February 24, 1916, during the First World War, and the P&O steamer Maloja had just passed the Admiralty Pier at 19 knots sailing in the direction of Folkestone, when there was a massive blast.

On board were 411 people including the crew. Some were military officers on their way for duties in India. Others were families. One was an African nurse, dressed in a red robe, returning home because of illness. Among the crew were 223 Lascars and other "natives".

Many of the passengers were on deck taking a last look at the white cliffs of Dover when the explosion ripped through the liner.

There was chaos on board but the master, Captain Charles Irving, realising the ship was only a couple of miles off Shakespeare Beach, decided to beach his ship.

Explosion at central China firecrackers plant leaves three missing

postcard printing CHANGSHA, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Three firefighters were reported missing in a firecrackers plant explosion in central China's Hunan Province Tuesday morning, the local fire control authorities said.

The blast happened at 7:10 a.m. at Changjin Firecrackers Plant in Taolin Town of Linxiang City, about two hours' drive from the provincial capital Changsha, said a spokesman with the Hunan Provincial Fire Brigade.

He said the fire brigade in Linxiang City sent paper bag printing two fire engines to the site at 7:30 a.m.

A second blast during the rescue work buried a firefighter, who was later rescued, and left three others missing, the spokesman said.

He said further casualties were not immediately known, and rescue work was continuing.

Suppressing video in Hiller ma

A Fayette County man accused of animal cruelty for alleged dog fighting wants evidence in the case suppressed, including a video that depicts an alleged dog fight.

James E. Holcomb Jr., 32, of Hiller, is charged by state police with two counts of cruelty to animals. He was one of three men charged in 2008 in an alleged dog-fighting ring in Brownsville.

Holcomb appeared in court Tuesday with his attorney, Charity Krupa Grimm of Smithfield, on a motion to suppress evidence and statements in the dog-fighting case.

In addition, he is seeking to suppress evidence in three other cases that involve charges for drugs, terroristic threats and driving under the influence.

In a criminal complaint, police allege they discovered evidence of dog fighting while serving an arrest warrant on Holcomb on Feb. 19, 2008, at a home on Shelton Avenue in Brownsville.

A pit bull at the house had scarring on its face, leg, shoulders and neck, according to the affidavit.

Police allege they found a dog-fighting pit in the basement and items used for dog fighting, including bite sticks and weights, in the house.

During yesterday's hearing, retired state police Trooper Timothy Knapp testified that Holcomb's mother and his girlfriend gave him cell-phone video of a dog fight that allegedly occurred Feb. 7, 2008, at a Hiller residence.

Knapp testified Fendi Fake Handbags the two provided the phone to him during Holcomb's preliminary hearing on drug charges. The drug charges were filed after police, while serving the arrest warrant, allegedly discovered illegal narcotics in the Shelton Avenue residence.

Court records indicate animal-cruelty charges that had been levied against Mark Anthony Johnson, 40, of Hiller, were disposed of in district court. Johnson entered a guilty plea to disorderly conduct and was sentenced in April to one year of probation by Judge Gerald Solomon.

The third man, Perry Wells, 31, of Lorain, Ohio, is awaiting trial on one count of cruelty to animals.

In addition, he faces trial on drug charges after police allege they found him in possession of cocaine at Holcomb's house on Feb. 19, 2008.

KUNMING, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- A mountain forest fire that had been raging three days in southwest China's Yunnan Province was put out Wednesday, local authorities said.

More than 4,900 firemen, soldiers and villagers had been mobilized and excavators, bulldozers, pumps and helicopters were used to fight against the fire that started at about 2:09 p.m. Sunday in the forest on the Mt. Yangmei in the Yi Autonomous County of Shilin, said Gao Bin, of the Yunnan Forest Police Corps.

An initial investigation shows that the fire spread up to 10 km and burnt 92 hectares of forest. It also forced the evacuation of about 3,400 villagers.
