House, Dineen garner honors U

ORONO - The University of Maine announced on Wednesday that Tanner House of the men's ice hockey team and Maire Dineen of the field hockey team are the recipients of the 2010 M Club Dean Smith Awards.

The awards are presented to the male and female student-athlete with outstanding academic and athletic achievement along with citizenship and community service.

House, a junior, serves as captain of the men's ice hockey team. A finance major, he has a 3.82 cumulative grade point average. He received a silver medal as a two-time Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winner. He has been named to the Hockey East Academic Honor Roll.

In 2008, House was named to the six-member Hockey East Academic All-Star team, which selected the top scholar-athletes by position. House has been named to the Dean's List every semester and is a recipient of the Presidential Achievement Pin.

Dineen, a junior, has been a standout in field hockey the past three years. She is a double major in international affairs and economics with a 3.89 cumulative grade point average. She received a silver medal as a two-time Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winner.

Dineen has been named to the America East Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll three times. She has twice been named to the America East All-Academic Team, holding the highest grade point average on the squad for the second year in a row. Last year, she was selected to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA District I At-Large All-Academic First Team.

Dineen has also been named to the Dean's List every semester and is a recipient of the Presidential Achievement Pin. She has also been named to the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association Division I National Academic squad.

In addition, the University of Maine Athletic Department named its fourth annual "Team Maine" representing the top sophomore, junior or senior achieving the highest grade point average for the calendar year 2009. Representing "Team Maine" for 2009 are:

Amanda Tewksbury, women's basketball, elementary education; Hilary Maxim, women's cross country and track, communication sciences and disorders; Mallory Pollard, field hockey, accounting; Jenna Ouellette, women's ice hockey, KPE-teaching/coaching; Kali Burnham, softball, KPE-teaching/coaching; Anjelica Hodgson, women's soccer, biochemistry; Dana Wright, women's swimming, marine science; George Tager, baseball, management; Andrew Rogers, men's basketball, KPE-teaching/coaching; Corey Bean, men's cross country and indoor Bertolucci Watch track, English; Chris Harmon, men's outdoor track, political science; Jermaine Henderson, football, child development; Jeff Dimmen, men's ice hockey, finance; Jeremy Bender, men's swimming, marine science; and Kristina Anderson, cheering, psychology

Also on Wednesday night, the Honorary M Club Awards were presented for service to the University of Maine Athletic Department. The 2010 Honorary M Club Awards went to Anne and Andy Britt, Jay Darling, Paula Kagan and Alan Kochis.

James, Woodward selected

The NCAA announced recently that Maine Director of Athletics Blake James and head men's basketball coach Ted Woodward have been selected to serve on NCAA committees.

James has been named to the NCAA Ice Hockey Rules Committee, while Woodward will serve on the NCAA Division I Basketball Issues Committee. All terms begin in September.
