1st LD-Writethru: Forest fire in southwest China province partially controlled

KUNMING, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- A forest fire that has been raging for two days on Mt. Cangshan, a picturesque mountain in southwest China's Yunnan Province, has been partially contained, the local fire control authority said Tuesday.

The fire broke out at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, and has burnt 70 hectares in the mountain by 5 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Forest Fire Control Headquarters in Yangbi Yi Autonomous County, Dali.

The headquarters said that more than 2,000 visitors and local residents have been evacuated and no casualty had been reported.

A helicopter has been sent to aid the fire control work in the hilly forest land. Roads linking to the mountainous area have been cordoned off, according to the headquarters.

It said that more than 700 people including local residents and soldiers had been working to put out the fire. The weather service department has also carried out measures to increase rainfall.

To facilitate the rescue and minimize economic losses, local county government has earmarked a relief fund of 200,000 yuan (29,282 U.S. dollars).

Vikings on new alert as Celtic

WIDNES VIKINGS are watching the Celtic Crusaders saga closely - and could tell the Rugby Football League that they are ready to take their top flight place if the Welsh club doesn't receive the green light on their proposed move to Wrexham.

Originally Crusaders' plan was to move to Newport from Bridgend but there is a big cloud of uncertainty over that proposal.

Eager Co-operative Championship clubs like Widnes are keen to step into the Welsh side's shoes and make a return to Super League, but the chances of that happening remain slim despite lobbying from local Halton MP Derek Twigg.

He is angered about the idea of the Celtic club moving to Wrexham - just 32 miles from the Vikings' Stobart Stadium Halton.

Widnes and a host of other Cooperative Championship clubs, including Barrow and Halifax, are monitoring the situation.

As things stand, the RFL have yet to confirm the Crusaders' move to North Wales and have expressed wholesale colthing 'concern' so close to the new season - it gives supporters a logistical nightmare in travelling from Bridgend to Wrexham.

But having thrown its weight behind expansion into Wales it would be highly unlikely that Widnes or any other team is parachuted in.

In fact there is a possibility, at this stage unconfirmed by the RFL, that another Welsh team could be drafted into the Cooperative leagues should the Crusaders move to Wrexham - meaning two Welsh teams north and south of the border.

Celtic are not in breach of their licence by moving to Wrexham, should that happen, which pours cold water over the hope of teams like Widnes who are desperate for a Super League opportunity.

Meanwhile, Widnes will not be making a move for Warrington pair Jon Clarke and Kevin Penny.

The Vikings' current salary cap constraints will not allow the pair to move to their Cheshire rivals.

Penny starred in Widnes's Northern Rail Cup win over Barrow last season but has been a bit-part player at the Halliwell Jones Stadium since moving back to Warrington.

Clarke, the former Great Britain hooker, is still part of Tony Smith's plans and a move anywhere is off the mark.

One player who has signed for Widnes on a dual contract is centre Chris Dean, who will play for the Vikings when he is not needed by St Helens. Dean made 12 senior appearances for Saints last season.

St Helens youngster Kyle Eastmond has ended speculation over his future by signing a new two-year contract.

Vintage fashions capture buyer

HUNDREDS of fashionistas bought clothes from past decades when they attended a vintage fashion fair in Exeter.

Some 30 stallholders from the South West sold clothes and accessories including bags, shoes and dresses at the Blind Lemon Vintage Fashion Fair at Devonshire House, on the University of Exeter's main campus.

All of the items at the fair, which takes place throughout the year in different locations, were from the Victorian and Edwardian eras, right up to the 1980s.

embroidered patches said: "It went really well. I think over 200 people bought lots of lovely vintage pieces."

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Space shuttle Endeavour and its six astronauts are back on Earth.

The shuttle landed at Kennedy Space Center in Florida late Sunday, wrapping up a successful two-week mission. TYLER, Texas - Two men who once attended church together were charged Sunday with intentionally burning down a church in east Texas and are suspected in a string of similar blazes, authorities said.

Jason Robert Bourque, 19, and 21-year-old Daniel George McAllister face one count of felony arson for a church fire in rural Smith County near Tyler, about 90 miles east of Dallas, said Tom Crowley, spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

CASPER, Wyo. - An investigation is under way into an explosion that leveled a Wyoming home, leaving an apparently suicidal man dead and three police officers injured.

Police received a call Saturday morning about a suicidal person in a house who had disconnected the gas lines.

The blast occurred just after noon. Michael Lesher, 44, died a few hours later at a hospital.

Police Lt. Mark Trimble said three officers were treated at the hospital for abrasions and bruises.

SCARLET FU, BLOOMBERG NEWS: Now, for more on what Google's plan to pull out of China means for U.S.-China trade. It's a story we have been following for a couple of days now. We have to join us William Reinsch, the former U.S. Undersecretary of Commerce and current President of the National Foreign Trade Council. He is joining us from Washington right now.

And we should add that he's also a member of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission which submits reports to Congress on national security implications of U.S. economic relations with China, so quite a mouthful there.

Mr. Reinsch, thank you for joining us this morning. I want to ask you was the hacking incident into Google's China Web site and Google's subsequent threat to leave China a turning point in any way for U.S.-China trade relations?

WILLIAM REINSCH, PRESIDENT, NATIONAL FOREIGN TRADE COUNCIL: Well, I think it dramatizes a growing set of problems that a lot of companies have had there. As your previous report just indicated their government is really taking a step, I think steps, in an anti-market direction, more subsidies, more national championed industries, continuation of an export- led growth Thomas sabo charms strategy, overvaluation of their currency.

I think you're seeing more and more American companies frustrated and rethinking the nature of that relationship and certainly there's going to be more pressure on the U.S. government to rethink it.

REINSCH: I would guess India, probably India, Brazil, other big markets.

FU: Okay, China in its defense probably feels that it has a right to call the shots if you're doing business in its country and it's probably earned it to a large extent by being the biggest creditor to the U.S., the U.S. government really not having a lot of leverage here.

REINSCH: Well, I'm sure their government thinks that. If you talk to their economists and you talk economist to economist I think their prescription for the Chinese economy is really the same is American- European economists.

They ought to revalue the RMB. They ought to pursue a domestic growth consumption strategy. They ought to, you know,

National literacy campaign kicks off in Nepal

KNOXVILLE -- Logic told Bruce Pearl to save his 3-2 zone defense for Kentucky's trip to Thompson-Boling Arena.

"I debated it," the Tennessee men's basketball coach admitted. "But I'm just not built that postcard printing way."

The Volunteers implemented their best Kentucky-based scheme in Rupp Arena two weeks ago, and their zone baffled the Wildcats for 30 minutes. But the game lasted 40 minutes, and second-ranked Kentucky gradually pulled away down the stretch for a 73-62 win.

"I may have made a calculated mistake," said Pearl, whose 19th-ranked Vols host the Wildcats on Saturday.

"Maybe I could have done that to Kentucky here with a better chance to beat them than showing them my hand up there, but I showed my cards. I just feel like I owe it to the kids to put them in a position where they at least have a chance to win.

"Now, does that cost us the win here, because I think that's the best way to beat them? I don't know, but that's the risk that you run. It's hard to play the game without giving your kids a chance to win."

There are two basic questions left, as it relates to the Vols and Wildcats.

Can the Vols play better than they did in Rupp? They think so.

Do the Vols have new wrinkles they can show the Wildcats? They think so.

But the bottom line is neither answer can show itself until Saturday afternoon.

"Whether or not we're going to be better the second time around against Kentucky, I don't know yet," Pearl said. "But I'm not holding anything back. I'm showing you my hand, and I'm going to play you the best way I think we can beat you. And so I'm exposed."

Assistant coach Jason Shay again was assigned the Kentucky scouting duty. Pearl calls his former Iowa point guard his "head scout," and Shay typically breaks down the Vols' toughest opponents.

"I've always taken pride in our preparation," Shay said after Thursday night's video session with the team. "I've had to scout for a lot of our big games, and it's important for me to give those guys my best effort, and to give them the best game plan for us to win ballgames."

The bags under his eyes, the disheveled hair atop his head and the scruff on his face indicated the challenges of working on the Wildcats.

"We poke fun at him all the time, but Coach Shay is the man," freshman forward Kenny Hall said. "He's a smart guy. He ain't no newborn at this."

Shay and Pearl agree on game-planning.

"I just want to win ballgames," said Shay, who came to UT with Pearl five years ago. "I don't care if we've got to throw the kitchen sink at them the first time, and they know most everything we're going to do the second time. There's plenty of basketball-strategy things that we can do to tweak the next game plan.

"You can do completely opposite things. There's always options."

But what is the best option for the Wildcats?

Shay might know, but he's not telling beforehand.

Pearl, UT players wary of Arkansas

KNOXVILLE -- It's simple logic.

The 16th-ranked University of Tennessee men's basketball team was good enough to defeat then-No. 1 Kansas and then-No. 2 Kentucky this season in Thompson-Boling Arena, so it should be able to beat Arkansas in Wednesday's home finale.

It sounds simple.

But it's not, according to the Volunteers and coach Bruce Pearl, who points to several tough tussles with the Razorbacks in recent years.

"They're just a good, hard, tough team, and they've matched up well against us," UT senior wing J.P. Prince said. "They like to play a fast-paced style, too, so it's usually a fun, exciting, close game.

"You can't just show up and beat those guys. They make you earn it."

The Vols (21-7, 9-5 SEC) needed a tough, midrange Bobby Maze jumper in the final five seconds to beat the Razorbacks (14-15, 7-7) last season in Fayeteville.

Arkansas avenged a blowout loss in Knoxville two seasons ago by stunning the Vols, 92-91, on a runner from 7-foot center Steven Hill -- a defensive specialist -- in a thrilling SEC tournament semifinal game.

UT senior forward Wayne Chism still doesn't like talking about Hill's shot, which inched over Chism's fingertips before banking into the basket.

"You're going to do that? You're going to go there?" Chism said when asked about the shot Monday night. "Come on, man. That was two years ago."

Pearl's second season featured a comeback 83-72 win in Fayeteville, but the coach's first UT team lost to Arkansas in Knoxville.

"They usually get beat by the top teams in the SEC, but they always come back wanting revenge," Chism said of the Razorbacks. "And they're good enough to beat you, too, if you don't take care of your business."

Then there is the massive hangover potential from UT's win over Kentucky on Saturday.

"(Arkansas) is a dangerous team and, obviously, in a dangerous place on the schedule," Pearl said. "They're one of the better offensive teams in our league."

The Razorbacks rebounded so well from a poor nonconference performance that they are tied for second in the SEC Western Division standings despite have lost their past three games, and four of the past five. Vanderbilt left Arkansas on Saturday with an 89-72 win.

"Vanderbilt played tremendous basketball at Arkansas on Saturday, and Arkansas did not play bad at all," Pearl said. "I looked at the score and thought maybe Arkansas had struggled some, but they hadn't.

"Arkansas is a team that won five straight SEC games (earlier this season), but they haven't played as well on the road as they have at home."

Razorbacks coach John Pelphrey said Wednesday's emotional atmosphere won't make his team's task any easier.

"We've got a very difficult road game coming up at Tennessee," he said. "They're one of the better teams in our league, and that's certainly a great environment. It won't be much fun playing them on their senior night. They have great senior leadership, and those young men h

Vols seeing UK as opportunity

KNOXVILLE -- A win today would do so much for the Tennessee men's basketball team.

UT could wipe away what little doubt lingers about its NCAA tournament chances. The Volunteers could move off the bubble before they ever really fell that far. brochure printing They could finish a regular season full of turmoil with serious momentum toward a March charge.

"It would be nice to stop all that (bubble) talk," sophomore guard Cameron Tatum said.

And that can happen this afternoon.

That's the good news for the 19th-ranked Vols. But there's also bad news. Their noon opponent in the Southeastern Conference game is second-ranked Kentucky (27-1, 12-1).

UT (20-7, 8-5) stands fourth in the SEC Eastern Division -- with a 1-4 record against UK, Vanderbilt and Florida -- and another loss to the Wildcats would virtually cement the Vols in that spot heading into the conference tournament.

But a win could change many things.

"It's in our minds, just knowing that we could be the only team to beat two No. 1 seeds," said senior point guard Bobby Maze, who played a pivotal role in UT's January upset of top-ranked Kansas. "I think Clip on charms that would be big for us, and it would just give our fans something special. They've supported us. They've done a great job this season.

"I think this would be the biggest win for our season right here, beating Kentucky on our home floor going down the stretch and going into the tournament."

"I've had teams -- I haven't had many -- but I've had a few teams where we were the best team in the league and the most talented team in the league," Pearl said. "You've got to struggle through February and some parts of January in that situation. You've just got to struggle through them. But once you get to late February, you can see March, and that's kind of where Kentucky is right now. They can see it, so they're really, really, really playing well."

In that case, it will take a really, really, really good effort for the Vols to withstand the Wildcats.

Vols survive senior day scare

KNOXVILLE -- Few things have come too easily for the seniors on the University of Tennessee men's basketball team.

Wednesday's senior night was no different.

But Wednesday, like most of the seniors' games in Thompson-Boling Arena, ended with a UT win.

The Volunteers pulled away from Arkansas midway through the second half and held off the feisty Razorbacks for an 80-73 win.

Sixteenth-ranked UT (22-7, 10-5 Southeastern Conference) sewed up a No. 3 Eastern Division seed in next week's conference tournament, while a fourth-consecutive loss prevented Arkansas (14-16, 7-8) from a chance to share the West Division title.

UT's seniors were equally surprised by coach Bruce Pearl's postgame comments.

Pearl wasn't particularly pleasant, despite his team shooting better than 50 percent from the field in both halves. He pointed to the Vols' 17 turnovers, 37-33 rebounding deficit and other sloppy moments rather than focusing on his happy-go-lucky veterans.

"I think how you feel a lot of times has to do with your expectations," Pearl said moments after the game. "I was pleased to win, but was hoping that we could build on how we played Saturday, and we did not. We didn't play basketball like you need to play basketball in March. We played good defense ... but I was just hoping that we would play better, and I was expecting them to play better, so I wasn't very happy with the team after the game.

"We just weren't particularly sharp."

The Vols' lead dwindled to 51-47 on a Rotnei Clarke 3-pointer with 15 minutes left, and Pearl lost his cool moments later.

UT sophomore guard Cameron Tatum was then whistled for a questionable, late charging foul on what could have been a 3-point play -- the referee motioned for nothing until the ball went through the basket -- and Pearl kept fuming at the officials until one gave him the technical.

"As soon as I saw Coach Pearl throw that jacket that hard, I was like, 'Oh, yeah, this is going to be a 'T.' This is going to be good,'" senior point guard Bobby Maze said.

Clarke hit one of the two technical free tosses, narrowing the gap to 51-48 with 14:34 left, but the Vols responded in a big way. Senior wing J.P. Prince leaked out on a fast break for a slam dunk, capping a 10-0 run that extended UT's lead to 61-48 with 11:23 left.

"We wanted to have some fun on senior night, and we definitely had some fun," Prince said. "I think Coach Pearl thought we were having too much fun. I don't know, man. Honestly, I didn't think we played that bad, but you know how Coach is.

"He's a coach. That's his job. He's supposed to be mad like that sometimes."

Pearl wasn't as upset after the game, but he pulled no verbal punches about his team's overall performance. His nearly 12-minute postgame interview session featured words and facial expressions usually reserved for UT losses.

"Obviously, I was upset at that time, and that's why I got a technical foul," Pearl said. "We may have picked up our energy for a minute, but that's not what should have happened at the beginning. We're trying to play well together from the start. I shouldn't have to jump-start them like that. We turned it over 17 times, and I just don't know

Vols' UK game plan almost pays

KNOXVILLE -- Bruce Pearl and his University of Tennessee men's basketball coaching staff threw a brilliant strike ball at John Calipari's third-ranked Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday night.

But the 12th-ranked Volunteers still left themselves with a 7-10 split.

That happens sometimes when you throw a light ball.

"We knew coming in that we had a good game plan -- a really good game plan," catalog printing UT senior point guard Bobby Maze. "But Kentucky's a good team, and they just made some big plays down the stretch."

The Volunteers stunned Kentucky with a 3-2 zone defense that stunted the Wildcats for most of the night. UT held a one-point lead with less than 10 minutes left.

Kentucky rallied from that point, though. Freshman point guards John Wall and Eric Bledsoe stood on the shoulders of their frontcourt's grunt work and delivered decisive, late blows in a 73-62 win.

Things stayed much more interesting for longer than most anticipated, though, thanks in large part to UT's defensive wrinkle. Calipari apologized to his team at halftime for being out-scouted.

Wall said Calipari walked into the halftime locker room and said, "My bad, guys."

Calipari's interpretation was similar.

"Let's give Tennessee credit here," Calipari said. "Bruce came in here, and they went to a 3-2 zone -- and I will be honest with you, we didn't work on it. I knew that they had it in their arsenal, but I didn't know that they would run it, because they didn't run it in any tapes that I had watched. In the first half, to be honest, we didn't look like we knew what the heck we were doing because we didn't. When we had the halftime, I told them, 'Guys, they are playing a 3-2 zone and that is not your fault. That is my fault. I am not blaming you but here is what we are going to do in the second half and how we will attack.'

"It's not their fault that we didn't prepare for three days, and that their coach did not understand."

You don't just win games during the season, though. You win them on the recruiting trail. And once Kentucky found a tiny crack against a tired UT defense, the outcome never seemed in doubt.

Wall scored six points and DeAndre Liggins added a transition steal and slam on the quick spurt that put Kentucky back in front. UT seniors Wayne Chism and J.P. Prince hit inside buckets to get the Vols back within 60-56, but Bledsoe then buried UT with eight consecutive points, courtesy of two corner 3-pointers and two free throws.

Prince praised Bledsoe's game-changing flurry but said the Vols had no regrets with their late strategy. Leaving the Wildcats open in the corner was by far the lesser of two evils, he argued.

"That's what really put them ahead, when (Bledsoe) made those shots against our zone," Prince said. "But we had to respect their big men so much, so you kind of just hope they miss from outside. Voluntary alcohol warnings may

THE drinks industry could be ordered to put prominent health warnings on all alcohol products under new moves being considered by the Government. Just 15% of alcoholic drinks currently carry labels containing five key messages, including how many units the drink contains.

The Department of Health yesterday launched a consultation about labelling, including proposing that health warnings are made mandatory.

A voluntary code agreed between the drinks industry and government has been in place since 2007.

The code said that by the end of 2008 the majority of alcoholic drink labels would include the number of units the drink contained; drinking guidelines of no more than three or four units a day for men and two or three for women, and the website address for the DrinkawareTrust.

Products should also carry a warning to pregnant women and those trying to conceive, alongside the Clip on charms words "know your limits", "enjoy responsibly" or "drink responsibly".

But a report released by the Department of Health, which is carrying out the England and Wales consultation, revealed that just 15% of drinks are "acceptable" in carrying all five warnings.

Public Health Minister Gillian Merron said: "Despite responsible efforts from some brands such as Bulmers, Foster's, Kronenbourg and the major supermarkets, overall progress on labelling is very disappointing.

"While there should be no need to bring in legislation when the industry can clearly sort it out themselves, we will not hesitate to act decisively if industry does not deliver.

"We know that too many are drinking at harmful levels and producers should play their part in helping to stem this tide Replica fendi wholesale by ensuring we all have access to clear and consistent health information on labels."

The report said that 85% of drinks now contain some unit and health information, but many labels are not acceptable in terms of quality or clarity.

"We have waited years for the drinks industry to comply with appropriate labelling, and make it easier to determine how much alcohol we are consuming. In the absence of consistent and supportive information it seems that legislation is the only way forward."

Volunteer attacked by thugs

A gang brutally attacked a St John Ambulance volunteer on his way home after an eight-hour shift.
